DURUM SORULARI

1.When you woke up this morning, the weather was beautiful, so you and your family decided to go to the beach. However, now that you are ready to go, there are grey clouds building up in the sky and it's looking as if it might rain. Everyone is feeling a bit discouraged, but knowing how changeable the weather is in your part of the world, you say optimistically:

A) I can't believe it was so beautiful less than an hour ago.
B) I don't think it'll be much fun sitting in the rain.
C) Why does this happen whenever we want to go out?
D) Those clouds will be gone by the time we get there.
E) I think we should stay at home and play cards instead.

2.You've just returned from a shopping trip, when you realise that you've lost your bag. You're in a complete panic as there are many important things İnside it. You try phoning the last shop you were in to see if you left it in the changing room there. When the manageress tells you that they have got it, you say with a sigh of relief:

A) Oh, that's annoying. I'll have to come back into town to fetch it.
B) Everything had better still be in that bag, or there'll be trouble.
C) Thank goodness, it's still there. I was afraid I'd never see it again.
D) You must have known it was my bag. Why didn't you call me?
E) Thanks so much for calling. I hadn't even realised that I'd lost it.

3.You're driving on the highway with a friend. Suddenly, a sports car comes out of nowhere at a very high speed and overtakes you, narrowly missing an oncoming car. Alarmed that the driver could have caused an accident, you turn to your passenger and say irately:

A) You're a road hog! Go back to driving school and learn how to drive properly.
B) Did you see that incredible car? I'd love to buy myself one of those some day.
C) Wow, that was fast! He must be trying to get to an appointment on time.
D) I'm so sorry, but there was nothing I could have done to prevent the accident.
E) What an idiot! He's going to kill himself or someone else with that reckless driving.

4.You've been having problems with your car. You take it to a garage and they give you a very high quote for doing the work, so you decide to try to repair it yourself. You spend the whole weekend working on the car, but eventually you manage to sort out the problem. Afterwards, you tell your father what happened, saying proudly:

A) I wish I could afford to buy a car that doesn't need repairing all the time.
B) I wasted my whole weekend repairing the car and now I'm exhausted.
C) If I'd known how much work it was going to be, I wouldn't have done it.
D) I fixed it all by myself and didn't have to pay the mechanic a penny.
E) Can you have a look at my car and tell me what's wrong?

5.One of your classmates is very upset because she's received a low mark for a composition she wrote. She is convinced that this is because the teacher, Mrs Bell, doesn't like her, and she wants to approach the principal about the matter. You've read her essay, and you think that the mark is fair. While trying not to hurt her feelings, you reason with her, saying:

A) I think you were really lucky to get the mark you did, because your essay is full of basic mistakes.
B) Even if Mrs Bell didn't like you, I don't think she would let her feelings influence the mark she gave.
C) If I were you, I would go and see the principal immediately and let her mark your essay instead.
D) The real problem with Mrs Bell is that she always gives higher marks to her favourite students.
E) Why don't you just go and speak to Mrs Bell privately and ask her why she is treating you so badly?

6.You have a new colleague at work. You've been given the task of training him and are trying to show him how to use one of the computer programs he needs to know. Although you've just explained the process several times, he is clearly still very confused. It's taking up a lot of your time, but you say patiently:

A) Don't get in a panic. I'll go through it all again very slowly.
B) If you think this is difficult, you're going to have a lot of problems.
C) Why didn't they hire someone with a background in computers?
D) You should have got this by now. It's not very complicated.
E) Perhaps you should just practise on your own — I've got work to do.

7.Your brother has recently written an exam. Before the exam, he was leading a busy social life instead of studying. Now he has just learnt that he has failed the exam. When your mother tells you this, you respond unsympathetically, saying:

A) It serves him right. He shouldn't have gone to that party the night before the exam.
B) I can't believe he's failed. He was so well prepared before he took the exam.
C) What a shame! He is so clever that I'm sure he could have passed the exam easily.
D) I hope he isn't feeling too bad about it. Exams aren't the most important things in life.
E) I feel really sorry for him, even though I know he should have worked much harder.

8.You are baby-sitting the neighbours' child, Tim, for the first time. After you've been there for about an hour, Tim says that he doesn't feel well, and he looks as if he may have a fever. You call his parents on their mobile phone, and taking care not to alarm them, say:

A) You've got to come back, I'm afraid, as I'm not prepared to look after a sick child.
B) I don't want to bother you, but could you tell me what your doctor's number is, please?
C) Please come home immediately and look after Tim, because he's feeling terribly ill.
D) I'm sorry to disturb you, but Tim is feeling slightly unwell and I'm not sure what to do.
E) If you were good parents, you would take care of your sick child instead of going out.

9.You and your brothers stayed up quite late last night, playing games and having a good time. This morning, your mother complains that she found it difficult to get to sleep last night, as the neighbours were being so noisy. Realising that it probably wasn't the neighbours who were responsible for keeping your mother awake, you admit:

A) I thought it was very quiet last night and I fell asleep quite easily.
B) Perhaps I should go over and have a word with the neighbours about it.
C) It couldn't have been me keeping you up because I went to bed early.
D) The neighbours are troublemakers and they should be more considerate.
E) It might have been us making the noise because we stayed up quite late.

10.You and a friend have planned a day in town together. Unfortunately, you're not ready to go when she arrives at your house, so it's only after about ten minutes that you both leave for the station to catch the train into town. As you step onto the platform, you see the train pulling out. Knowing that it will be half an hour before the next one arrives, you say guiltily:

A) Wouldn't it be great if we could afford to travel by taxi all the time?
B) I'm really looking forward to going into town and doing some shopping.
C) We're not in a hurry, so we don't need to worry about missing the train.
D) We've got time for a coffee because the next one is in thirty minutes.
E) I feel bad. If I hadn't kept you waiting so long, we would have caught it.

11.You go out to dinner at a friend's house. Sadly, it turns out to be one of those dreadful evenings when everything goes wrong — the food is awful and you don't get on with the other guests. You leave as early as possible, saying insincerely:

A) I really appreciate all the effort you made, but it wasn't a terribly successful evening, was it?
B) Thank you so much for a wonderful evening. I haven't enjoyed myself so much for a long time.
C) I would have enjoyed it much more if the food had been better and the guests had been nicer.

E) I don't know where you met those other people, but I'm afraid I really don't like them at all.

12.You have a new colleague whom you're helping to train. You set him a task, leaving him to complete it on his own. He finishes the work in half the time you expect it to take. You are impressed, so you praise him, saying:

A) I'd better find you something else to do now.
B) I hope that you are finding this training useful.
C) Now that you've finished that, you can do this.
D) That was fast work! You did a really good job.
E) If you worked more quickly, it would be better.

A) Don't worry, Madam. This happens quite often and the children are always okay.
B) It might be a good idea to call the police if we don't find him in the next ten minutes.
C) If you bring a small child into a supermarket, you must hold his hand all the time.
D) What does your son look like and can you remember what he is wearing today?
E) The problem is that a supermarket just isn't a suitable environment for a young child.

14.While you're preparing for a party, your sister spills coffee all over your new white shirt. She's very apologetic, but you're upset, so you can't help but respond hurtfully, saying:

B) Now look what you've done! You're always so clumsy.
C) I know it was an accident, but you could at least say sorry.
D) Don't worry about it. I'm always doing things like that.
E) It's only an old shirt, so it really doesn't matter in the least.

15.Your parents have gone out, and you and a group of friends are watching a horror film on video. Just as the film finishes, you hear a noise that sounds a bit like a door slamming. Under the influence of the film, you say nervously:

B) What's that? I think someone might be trying to break into the house.
C) Please don't slam the door. That sound really gets on my nerves.

A) If you don't keep your nose out of our business, I'm going to quit.
B) I know you are so busy that you cannot be aware of every detail, but could I explain a few things?
